|

Level of Description | Series |
Extent and medium of the unit of description | 8 archival boxes of sheet music and textual documents |
Archival history | The collection was mostly put together by John Miller who, during his membership of the WMA, served as secretary, treasurer and archivist. It was later sold by Dave Cope from Left on the Shelf to Janey Buchan. Material relating to or produced by the WMA from elsewhere in Janey Buchan’s collection has been added to the series. |
Administrative History | The Workers’ Music Association was formed in 1936 to coordinate the activity of 44 choirs and 5 orchestras in the London Labour Choral Union and Cooperative. Its mission is to promote music, the composition of music and musical education relating to socialist, labour and workers’ movements. Throughout its history it has published both original and traditional compositions from the workers’ movement and continues to be active today. Throughout its early history it was close to the Communist Party of Great Britain and was instrumental in promoting the music and culture of the Soviet Union through publishing sheet music and essays as well as organising concerts and recitals of Soviet music. Among its key members were founder Alan Bush, John Miller, who collected much of the material in this series, and Hanns Eisler who later composed the national anthem of the GDR. |
Scope and content | Material includes a significant collection of sheet music published by the Workers’ Music Association along with WMA publications in the form of journals, pamphlets and programmes. There is also a limited selection of correspondence and administrative material produced by or relating to the WMA or WMA members along with some material produced by the London Labour Choral Union which became the WMA in 1936. |
